Choosing a key machine
Manual, electronic and CNC key machines compared by what they actually cut, what they cost to run, and who each one suits.
A key machine is the largest single purchase most locksmiths make. The deciding question is not brand, it is which key types you need to cut and how many a week.
The three classes
| Class | Cuts | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| Manual duplicator | Edge-cut and standard residential blades by tracing an original | Anyone who copies existing keys and does not originate them |
| Electronic or code machine | Edge-cut and laser or track keys, cut to a code without an original | Automotive work, lost-key jobs, high security residential |
| CNC | Laser, track, tibbe, dimple and high security, plus code origination | Volume automotive and anyone cutting for other locksmiths |
What actually decides it
- Can you cut to code? A duplicator needs a working original. If you attend lost-key jobs you need code origination, and that rules out duplicators entirely.
- Laser and track keys. Most cars since the mid 2000s use them. A machine that only does edge cuts will not touch them.
- Clamps and jaws. The machine is only as capable as the jaws you own. Check what is included and what each extra jaw costs before comparing prices.
- Cutter wear. Cutters and tracers are consumables. A cheap machine with scarce or costly cutters is not cheap.
- Software and updates. Some code machines charge annually for the code library. Ask what happens when the subscription lapses: some keep cutting from the last update, some stop.
How to use our range
Our key machines are grouped on the home page by budget, because the same word covers a cutting wheel and an eight thousand dollar CNC. Every machine page lists its own capability, and replacement jaws, cutters and parts sit in the same department.
If you are choosing between two specific machines, email us with the key types you need to cut and we will tell you plainly whether the cheaper one covers them.
Questions
Do I need a separate machine for laser keys?
Not necessarily. Combination edge and laser machines cut both, which is usually cheaper than two machines and takes less bench space.
Are the cheaper machines any good?
For duplicating edge-cut keys, often yes. The gap shows in code origination accuracy, clamp rigidity and how long the cutters last.
What is the lead time on a machine?
The delivery estimate is on each machine's product page, and machines ship freight. If you need one for a specific date, ask before ordering.
About this guide
This is general information about how the work is normally done, not advice for the particular vehicle, lock or machine in front of you. It does not replace manufacturer instructions, training, or your own judgement about whether a job is within your competence. Specifications and fitment change between model years, so check the code on the original part before you buy or cut anything. See the terms.
