Rekeying is changing which key turns a lock, done by swapping the bottom pins in the plug for a set that matches the new cuts. It costs a fraction of a new cylinder and leaves the door hardware and the finish untouched.

Kits are organised by brand because pin sizes and depth increments are not shared between them. A Kwikset kit will not repin a Schlage cylinder. Check which system the lock belongs to before ordering, and count how many chambers it has.
